Bowling Green redshirt freshman wide receiver Ryan Burbrink registered three receptions for 46 yards last Thursday in the Falcons’ 29-20 Military Bowl loss to San Jose State before 17,835 spectators at RFK Stadium in the nation’s capital.

Despite the loss, the former DeMatha standout said he enjoyed playing in familiar surroundings.

“It was great coming home,” Burbrink said. “All my friends and family came out. Even though it was a business trip, we didn’t take care of business all the way, but you know, it was great coming home.”

Burbrink had a career performance in the Falcons’ season opener, a 27-14 road loss to the Florida Gators of the Southeastern Conference.

“Eight catches down in the swamp against Florida’s defense — that was a great experience,” Burbrink said. “The atmosphere was crazy. It was just a confidence booster for me.”

During his high school career, Burbrink was a two-sport star at DeMatha, excelling on both the gridiron and the baseball diamond.

As a senior, Burbrink amassed 28 receptions for 632 yards and five touchdowns to help lead the Stags to a 10-2 record. He earned first team All-Washington Catholic Athletic Conference honors and was named the league’s Co-Player of the Year during baseball season.

Despite his athletic success, Burbrink had few college offers and opted to become a preferred walk-on at Bowling Green. He has since earned a scholarship for the Football Bowl Subdivision team that competes in the Mid-American Conference.

“I love it,” Burbrink said. “It’s a great school, great academics. I love being there.”

After a 1-3 start to the season, Bowling Green won seven of its final nine games to finish the 2012 campaign at 8-5.

“It was a great season,” Burbrink said. “Unfortunately, we didn’t get it done in the bowl game, but it was a good season.”
