McNamara softball wins nail-biter, Divas lose big

Kayla Preston MSWASHINGTON, D.C. – The D.C. Divas, the 2015 Women’s Football Alliance national champions, suffered their first loss of the season in their home opener against the Dallas Elite, 40-19 on April 9.

Divas wide receiver Ashley Whisonant was the standout on the day, as she had six receptions for 114 yards and a touchdown. The Divas will get ready to take on the Boston Renegades on April 16 with the hopes of earning their first win of the season.

Bowie State University’s tennis squad shut out the University of Maryland Eastern Shore 8-1 on April 6. Bowie State bounced back at No. 2 doubles, as freshman Sharaya Dunwell (Silver Spring) and senior Antonique Johnson (Laurel) cruised to an 8-2 decision. The Lady Bulldogs’ combo of senior Rahwa Habtemariam (Lanham) and freshman Madeleine Ndema (Lanham) shutout the opposition by a score of 8-0 at No. 3 doubles.

Bishop McNamara’s softball team defeated Elizabeth Seton in a nail-biter on April 8, wining 6-5 in nine innings. McNamara junior outfielder Kayla Preston, pictured, was perfect at the plate with four hits. She scored a run as well. Teammate Laurie Irons earned the win on the mound and struck out 15 batters to help lead her team to victory. McNamara will face Good Counsel on April 11.
