BRANDYWINE – Frederick Douglass shut out Fairmont Heights, 38-0, on Nov. 12 during a 1A Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA) high school football playoff match.
The Eagles flew high from start to finish as they relied on their senior quarterback and a potent rushing attack. Douglass quarterback Ja'Juan Payton-Glover made plays both on the ground and through the air time and time again. He accounted for three total touchdowns and 85 yards.
Payton-Glover wowed the fans when he left defenders in his wake as he rushed for a 10-yard touchdown late in the second quarter. He also threw a beautiful touch pass to Dale Edwards from 11 yards out in the third quarter to go up 30-0.
Kevin Broome led Douglass in rushing with 83 yards and a touchdown on just 11 carries. Jackson Jones had a huge 40-yard run to put the game out of reach for the final score of the contest.
Douglass (8-3) will face No. 1 Lackey (Indian Head) in the next round. Lackey throttled No. 4 Surrattsville, 57-6.
“We preserved the shutout, which was important to us,” Frederick Douglass Head Coach Julius Pinkney said. “Offensively I thought that we moved the ball well. I'm excited for us to be back in the playoffs against Lackey and it's going to be a good show.”
