Spring high school playoff matches are heating up

BALTIMORE — The state high school playoffs are in full swing, and several Prince George’s County Schools (PGCPS) are in the mix and doing well.    

In baseball, there will be some county representation in the regional finals on May 18. DuVal and Parkdale faced off for a spot in the final on May 15. Parkdale got a first-round bye and then topped High Point, 15-7.    

The Tigers broke out their offense in getting wins over Laurel (22-13) and Northwestern (19-9). That landed DuVal in the region semifinal with Parkdale.    

The Oxon Hill Clippers representing 3A got a first-round bye, beating Potomac (6-5) and then were set to meet Poly in the region semifinal.    

Gwynn Park also got a first-round bye in Class 2A and then routed Patterson 17-1 in the next round. Lake Clifton was waiting next for a May 15 region semifinal match-up.    

Fairmont Heights was to meet CMIT North in a region semifinal in Class 1A South after a bye and a win over Douglass-PG. Friendly had a region semi-date with McDonough on May 15 after a bye and an 8-7 victory over Surrattsville.    

In softball, the teams are still in the second round. Class 4A South featured many Prince George’s match-ups scheduled for May 14.

High Point and Parkdale were to play that day as were Northwestern and Laurel. Flowers and Bowie had a game along with Roosevelt and Wise.    

In Class 3A South, Oxon Hill and Potomac were going to meet on May 14 with four Class 1A South games had Prince George’s teams. Largo-Fairmont Heights, Friendly-McDonogh, Douglass-North CMIT plus Lackey-Surrattsville all were set for May 14 match-ups.

For boys lacrosse, Class 4A South also will have a lot of local teams. Northwestern and High Point were set to meet in the region semifinal on May 14 as were Eleanor Roosevelt and Bowie.    

All four teams got a first-round bye, and easy second-round wins – Northwestern beat Bladensburg, 9-1, High Point topped Laurel, 11-3, Roosevelt crushed C.H. Flowers, 20-4, and Bowie rolled past Wise, 13-3.

Class 2A North had Gwynn Park and Central in the region semifinal on May 14. Gwynn Park got a bye and then topped Carver (Baltimore), 8-7. Central beat Patterson (1-0) and Crossland (7-3).    

In Class 1A South, Largo and Douglass also had a May 14 meeting set in the regional semifinals. Largo got two byes while Douglass got one plus an 11-5 victory over Fairmont Heights.  

Girls lacrosse had two region semifinal match-ups with Prince George’s teams on May 14 in Class 4A South. The first was Northwestern-Parkdale with Eleanor Roosevelt-Wise being the other.    

All four schools had first-round byes. Northwestern then beat Bladensburg (15-1) while Parkdale topped Laurel (14-10). Roosevelt beat Flowers (14-3) and Wise defeated Bowie (11-6).    

In Class 3A South, Oxon Hill earned a spot in the May 14 region semifinal against Poly. The Clippers got a bye and a 15-0 victory over Potomac.    

Gwynn Park had an easy road to the Class 2A North region semifinal on May 14. Actually, so did its opponent, Eastern Tech, as neither team had to play a game. Both had two byes, and they’re the only two teams in their half of the region.  

Fairmont Heights and Largo took a similar path to the Class 1A South region semifinal May 14. For Fairmont Heights, it got two byes while Largo had one plus a forfeit victory over Douglass.
