DeMatha looks to continue its dominace in WCAC

Mike Jones MSHYATTSVILLE - The DeMatha Stags are known for their dominance in sports throughout the state of Maryland and all over the world.   As for basketball, there are four current NBA players that attended DeMatha, including the first overall pick from the 2017 NBA Draft Markelle Fultz. Despite losing remarkable talent every season, DeMatha continues to be one of the best basketball teams in, not only Maryland, but the entire country.  This season, DeMatha’s boys’ basketball varsity team is off to a 7-0 start and look to continue their rule at the top.

HYATTSVILLE – While the DeMatha Catholic High School gym boasts a large banner proclaiming the basketball team’s 39 Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) championships, it has been some time since the Stags have been able to hoist the WCAC trophy.

DeMatha soccer falls to Gonzaga in WCAC title game again

The striker, whose scoring touch has tormented defenses 23 times this season, struggled to find the one shot required to give the DeMatha Catholic High School boys’ soccer team the lead in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) Championship.

VIDEO: DeMatha’s defense derails McDonogh in 17-14 victory

MylesMiree 2LANDOVER – Trailing 14-7 at halftime, DeMatha Head Coach Elijah Brooks challenged his team to step up and defend their home field following a poor showing in the opening half. Last year’s Washington Catholic Athletic Conference champions had committed seven penalties and threw an interception on their final first-half drive.

With all the troubles the Stags faced, their defense rose to the occasion.

Stags strive for fifth straight WCAC Championship

Copy of DM Tyler LenhartHYATTSVILLE – At the end of a long day of practice, DeMatha Head Coach Elijah Brooks stood in front of the blazing sun, reminding his team of the preparation basics for the next day: hydrate before and after practice, eat breakfast and come to practice on time.

A commanding “Yes, Sir” from each player following every statement echoed across the practice field. The team quickly huddled together and chanted “repeat” before dispersing.

76ers select Fultz No.1 overall

Markelle Fultz MSSEABROOK – After graduating from DeMatha Catholic High School in the spring of 2016, Markelle Fultz continued his basketball career at the University of Washington – more than 2,700 miles and 40 hours away from his hometown of Upper Marlboro.

After Thursday night’s NBA Draft, Fultz will begin his professional career a lot closer to home. A short two-hour trip up I-95 to be exact.
