Happy anniversary!

Congratulations to Dorothy and Robert Stavely on their 65th wedding anniversary. The Stavelys are longtime residents of Hyattsville and very active members of St. Jerome’s Church. May they have many more anniversaries!

Franklin’s new art

Have you noticed the flashy new mural over Franklin’s Restaurant on Baltimore Avenue? Hyattsville’s newest piece of public art is a 14-by-40-foot mural installed recently over the south-facing exterior brick wall at the Hyattsville brewery and general store.

“My first love is neon,” admits restaurant owner Mike Franklin. That wasn’t feasible for a project of this size, but Franklin still wanted something “whimsical, cherry and colorful.” When he searched Google for kinetic light mural, he knew he had found his medium. Soon he found an artist who specialized in it, Massachusetts designer Liz Manicatide. She comes to Hyattsville this month to transform the already eye-catching painting into the kinetic light mural of Franklin’s imagination.

You must drop by some evening to see the new mural and stay for dinner, as I have always found the food at Franklin’s to be delicious and Mike is such a pleasant host.

Annapolis update

Delegate Alonzo Washington advises that he feels that the Maryland General Assembly concluded the 2013 legislative session with tangible results. There will be improvements to our public education system, transportation and infrastructure, environment and our local economy. If you have any comments or concerns, please call Delegate Washington at 410-841-3652.

Hoyer’s birthday bash

Congressman Steny Hoyer’s annual Bull Roast and Birthday Party will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, June14, at the Newton White Mansion in Mitchellville. Although a redistricting process took place a few years ago, part of the congressman’s constituency remains in Hyattsville.

Purple Line open houses

The Maryland Transit Administration will hold a series of open houses on the Purple Line project. The Purple Line is a proposed 16-mile light rail line from Bethesda in Montgomery County to New Carrollton in Price George’s County.

MTA is so efficient in keeping us up to date on the progress of the Purple Line as part of the light rail system that will skirt Hyattsville. There is a meeting from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Riverdale Elementary School and a second meeting from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Langley Park Community Center.

Electric upgrades

As I write this column something very interesting in taking place on our street, 41st Avenue. For three days our street has been full of Pepco trucks from Queensbury Road to Oliver Street. It seems that Pepco is updating our electricity by installing new poles and wiring. This upgrade is so comforting to us as it may prevent us from losing power in future storms.
