Maryland senior forward and Riverdale Baptist product Tianna Hawkins was selected by the Seattle Storm with the sixth overall pick in Monday’s WNBA Draft at ESPN headquarters in Bristol, Conn.

“I am so fortunate to be drafted by head coach Brian Agler and a team like the Storm,” said Hawkins. “A few years ago, I never thought I’d be here, but this experience has been unbelievable. I would not be here without my teammates, my family and my coaches. I cannot wait to get to work and start the next phase of my career.”

Hawkins was among a group of 12 players invited to attend the 2013 WNBA Draft and was the first ACC player drafted this year. She joins a Seattle Storm team that finished 16-18 and advanced to the Western Conference semifinals last season.

Hawkins, a Clinton native, was named AP All-America honorable mention and earned first team All-ACC honors at Maryland this year.

She finished her career No. 11 on Maryland’s all-time scoring list with 1,595 points and No. 3 in rebounds with 1,086. She scored in double figures in 31 of 34 games this season and amassed 17 double-doubles.

She finished her senior campaign No. 2 in the ACC in both scoring (18.0 ppg) and rebounding (9.7 rpg).

“I’ve said all season long that Tianna is the most improved player I’ve ever coached and that comes from her hard work,” said Maryland head coach Brenda Frese. “I know she will have a great career because of her work ethic and passion for whatever she does.”

Former Terrapin Diandra Tchatchouang was drafted 20th overall (second round) by the San Antonio Silver Stars. Tchatchouang played at Maryland for two seasons and was named to the ACC All-Freshman team in 2010.

Since leaving College Park, Tchatchouang has played professionally in her native country of France. She averaged 9.1 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game through 27 French League games during the 2012-2013 campaign and was named to the French National Team following the 2012 Olympics.
