Schools receive pianos
Walker Mill Middle School and Largo and Central high schools received four donated pianos from Bowie State University. A fifth piano was bought from Bowie State University with a grant provided to the Foundation for the Advancement of Music and Education to benefit Prince George’s County Public Schools.
PGCPS to host job fair for teachers
PGCPS will hold a job fair on Saturday, Dec. 1 at Dr. Henry A. Wise, Jr. High School in Upper Marlboro to recruit educators to teach within the school system. Candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree, hold or be eligible for a professional certificate appropriate to what they would be teaching issued by the Maryland State Department of Education. Those interested must pre-register to attend by Nov. 20.
Leadership Profile Meeting hosted by the Board of Education
The Prince George’s County Board of Education will be hosting a leadership profile meeting on Thursday, Dec. 13 at 7 p.m. in the Board Room of the Sasscer Administration Building. This is part of the planned process for selecting the next Superintendent for Prince George’s County Public Schools. The meeting will be open to the public, but there will be no public comments.
New season of “Count On Us” math show
Prince George’s County Public Schools has a new season of “Count On Us” Math Show, which airs Mondays and Wednesdays from 4-6 p.m. During the show, viewers can call in questions at 301-772-0080 or email cou@pgcps.org to get live homework assistance. The show airs on Comcast Channel 96, Verizon Channel 38 or can be watched live online at www.pgcps.org.
University of Maryland Writing Center helps victims of Superstorm Sandy
The University of Maryland Writing Center has prepared its staff of 60 to provide remote tutoring to students in New York and New Jersey that were affected by Hurricane Sandy.
New Director of UM Ventures named
The MPower Collaborative between University of Maryland, College Park and University of Maryland, Baltimore has announced its new Director of UM Ventures, James L. Hughes. He was formerly the chief enterprise and economic development officer and vice president at UMB. UM Ventures is an ambitious joint research commercialization effort of the two schools. Hughes will combine the commercialization and entrepreneurial efforts of the universities.
Registration for PGCC spring classes begins Dec. 3
This year registration for spring classes will begin Dec. 3, 2012. Students can register in the student services wing of Bladen Hall on the Largo campus, at Prince George’s Community College at University town Center or at Laurel College Center. Returning students can register online at www.pgcc.edu or by calling the information center at (301) 322-0900. Students may register until 11:59 p.m. the day before classes begin.
Police Academy graduates complete basic training
On Friday, Nov. 30, at 7 p.m., 16 students will graduate from the Prince George’s Community College Municipal Police Academy. Seven of the students will be receiving special recognition including the Major Larry L. Shanks Leadership Award.
Free HIV/AIDs testing on World AIDS Day
Prince George’s Community College will be offering free HIV/AIDs testing to the public on Dec. 1 in recognition of World AIDS Day. People can also receive free sexually transmitted infections screenings and attend a dramatic presentation and panel discussion about the disease. This event will be held at Signature Blue II, 337 Brightseat Road #20 in Landover.
80 students inducted into International Honor Society
Eighty students will be inducted into the Tau Pi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society at PGCC, Dec. 7 from 2-3 p.m. in Largo Student Center. Honor Society members must have at least 15 general education credits and maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or higher. They also must complete two service projects during the academic year.
