Record rebounds
Clinton native and former Riverdale Baptist forward Tianna Hawkins recorded her 1,000th rebound against Boston College in a key victory last Thursday in College Park. The Terrapin scored 15 points. Hawkins became only the fourth — male or female — to reach the rebounding milestone for the University of Maryland.
Lady Spartans prevail over Northwestern
Laurel’s girls’ basketball team dominated Northwestern in the first round of the playoffs, winning 72-31 last Thursday. The No. 5 Spartans knocked off Northwestern with four players scoring in double-figures. Lisa Jing led all scorers with 17 points, and Aldijah Koeimon followed with 15.
DuVal girls win by slim margin
DuVal’s girls’ basketball team slipped by Wise in a 43-42 game that went into overtime to determine a winner. Milan Williams led the charge with 23 points, and she was perfect from the charity stripe going 6-6. Blessing Modozie scored nine points. The two players’ impressive play pushed the Tigers to the next round of the playoffs.
Parkdale knocks Bladensburg out of playoffs
Parkdale’s girls’ basketball squad knocked off Bladensburg 47-36 in the first round of the 4A South playoffs. Kareema Conteh led the Panthers in scoring with 15 points, and Ijemoa Ajemba accounted for 14 points and 17 rebounds in the lopsided victory.
Boys’ playoffs begin
The State Basketball draw for the boys’ division was held Feb. 17 at Long Reach High School to determine the playoff bracket pairings. The first round of playoffs was held Tuesday, and the winners of that round advanced to the quarterfinals Thursday. No. 1 Eleanor Roosevelt has been heavily favored and received a first round bye in 4A. Potomac has been considered the frontrunner in 3A.
