BSU football players named to All-America teams

Bowie State University football standouts Curtis Pumphrey and Khari Lee were recently named to the Beyond Sports Network Division II Preseason Football second and third All-America teams. Pumphrey was named as the CIAA Rookie of the Year. Both Lee and Pumphrey were also selected to represent the 2012 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association All-Conference team.

The Bowie Baysox swept the three-game series against the Altoona Curve. The Baysox won 7-5 Friday night. Baysox starting pitcher Jake Pettit threw for six and two-thirds innings. He struck out six batters in the no-decision. Baltimore Orioles outfielder Nolan Reimold scored the first hit of his rehab assignment with a two-out, two-RBI single in the seventh inning.

Local boxer avenges November knockout

Heavyweight boxer Seth Mitchell defeated Johnathon Banks at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N. Y., Saturday night. The two heavyweights first met in the ring in November, when Banks knocked out the Brandywine native in the second round. “Mayhem” Mitchell won the rematch after training with an extensive workout regimen, which gave him the stamina to last through the unanimous decision. Mitchell reclaimed the NABO Heavyweight and WBC International World Championships.

Bayhawks lose by one point

The Chesapeake Bayhawks fell to the Charlotte Hounds 15-14 Saturday night. Drew Westervelt and John Grant Jr. scored hat tricks, but it wasn’t enough to hold the Hounds from victory. Michael Kimmel added two two-point goals, and Kyle Dixon helped his team with four assists.
