Weekly wrap up: D.C. Divas, Bowie Baysox kick off respective seasons

D.C. Divas tackle Pittsburgh Passion

The D.C. Divas women’s football team started off their season on the right foot with a 42-31 road win against the Pittsburgh Passion on Saturday. Divas running back Kenyetta Grigsby broke a franchise record with 265 yards rushing, and she scored two touchdowns. Wide receiver Ashley Whisonan, a Bowie native, had four catches for 180 yards and three touchdowns to help lead her team to victory. The Divas home opener will be on April 27 at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex.

Baysox blowout

Bowie Baysox pitcher Jake Pettit picked up his first win of the season Friday against the Harrisburg Senators, the Washington Nationals AA affiliate, in a 15-7 blowout. Pettit pitched six innings, had six strikeouts and only allowed one base on balls. The Baysox will host their season opener at Prince George’s Stadium on Thursday night against the Akron Aeros. The seven game homestand will feature a schedule magnet giveaway. Friday night is pie night for fans to enjoy.

Bowie State wins double header

Bowie State University’s softball team grabbed two wins against Elizabeth City State on Saturday. The Bulldogs won 6-5 in their first contest and 10-6 in the second game of the double header. Sophomore Kiara Washington led her team with four RBIs, and senior Megan Alexander had three RBIs in both conference victories.

Stags shutout

DeMatha’s baseball team earned its 10th win of the season against The Heights in Potomac on Saturday. The Stags shut out their competition 10-0 with the help of senior pitcher Michael Reavis. Reavis earned his first win of the season throwing for five scoreless innings and tallying five strikeouts on 57 pitches.

BSU does well at Duke Invitational

The Bowie State women’s and men’s outdoor track and field teams performed well at the Duke Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Kendall Reynolds and Brelyn Finley led the women while Brian Williams and Anthony Kiser led the men.
