Caps top Flyers in pre-season match-up

The Washington Capitals defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 6-3 in a pre-season game at the Verizon Center in Washington D.C. on Friday. Washington Capitals left wing Alexander Ovechkin scored two goals, and right wing Eric Fehr scored two goals. Washington Capitals goaltender Michal Neuvirth had 32 saves.

The Capitals play their home opener at 7 p.m. Thursday against the Calgary Flames.

Football: Suitland defeats DuVal

Suitland knocked off DuVal in a battle of unbeaten football teams 21-6 on Saturday. Suitland quarterback Wesley Wolfork threw 69 yards and a touchdown pass. He also rushed for a touchdown. Suitland running back Josh Burke rushed 72 yards and scored a touchdown.

Boys’ soccer: Crossland shuts out Surrattsville

Crossland’s boys’ soccer team took down Surrattsville 6-0 last Thursday. Rodney Ngoh scored three goals and tallied two assists. Other contributors to their convincing win were Richard Galeano and Mauro Zango. Galeano scored two goals, and Zango put another score on the board for his squad.

Football: Forestville mops up Fairmont Heights

The Forestville Military Academy football team shut out Fairmont Heights 46-0 on Saturday. Forestville running back Marcel Joly rushed more than 100 yards on four carries, including 71 yards to score a touchdown. Forestville remains undefeated and has two conference wins. Forestville faces Central on Oct. 5.
