Caps win home opener
The Washington Capitals defeated the Calgary Flames 5-4 in a shoot out during the home opener last Thursday at the Verizon Center. Trailing 3-0, the Capitals rose to the occasion and put together a comeback effort to earn their first victory of the season. Alexander Ovechkin scored two goals and tallied an assist. Nicklas Backstrom scored a goal and had an assist as well to help lead his team to victory.
Gwynn Park slams Crossland, 66-7
Gwynn Park’s football program defeated Crossland 66-7 on Saturday. Marquis Moody rushed for 66 yards on three carries, and fellow teammate Charles Tutt had two carries for 44 yards. Another contributor to their offensive efforts was wide receiver Marcus Porter, who caught three balls for 83 yards and a touchdown to help catapult his team to an undefeated start to the season.
High Point boys’ soccer tops DuVal, 5-1
High Point’s boys’ soccer team defeated DuVal 5-1 on Oct. 3. The Tigers could only muster one goal against the Eagles high flying offensive attack. The players who scored with unassisted goals are: Elmer Funes, Urich Ndip, Marco Ponce, Fredy Roque and Walid Yacoubou. After this contest, High Point notched their fifth win of the year.
Forestville football shuts out 38
Forestville’s football squad crushed Central 38-0 on Saturday. Forestville running back Marcel Joly rushed past the century mark with 133 yards on the ground and three scores. Forestville’s Smith Merzeir also rushed for over 100 yards, and punched in a score for good measure. The Knights remain undefeated with their first shutout victory of the season.
