As a press conference was held by county officials at Prince George’s County Police Headquarters in Landover to announce that overall crime has dropped by 7.6 percent in Prince George’s County, homicide detectives were on the scene of the county’s 61st homicide of the year.

Just after 10 a.m. Wednesday, patrol units from Prince George’s County Police Department’s District III were called to Pleasant Home Apartments in Seat Pleasant for a reported shooting.

Upon arrival, officers located Nicoh Mayhew, 25, suffering from a gunshot wound to his head and his two-year-old son with a gunshot wound to his arm. The child was transported to Children’s National Medical Center in stable condition, said PGPD spokeswoman Julie Parker.

Mayhew was pronounced dead at the scene, police officials said.

“We have learned that the adult male was targeted by the two adult males who did the shooting. They fled the scene in a four-door, black BMW with Maryland tags,” Parker said.

Mayhew was scheduled to testify in an upcoming trial, police officials said.

State ’s Attorney Angela Alsobrooks said that Mayhew had been offered protection several times. Though he seemed concerned about his safety, Alsobrooks said, Mayhew declined the protection.

“Mayhew’s death was not his fault,” Alsobrooks said at a press conference Thursday. “Whether or not he declined protection, he deserved to be safe.”

“We need people to come forward so that we can remove these dangerous predators from our community,” she added.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to call PGPD Homicide Unit at (301)772-4925. Callers wishing to remain anonymous may call Crime Solvers at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477).
