“This is not a storm that anyone should take lightly, and I would urge all residents to plan to get to a safe place before the storm arrives Friday afternoon,” said Metro General Manager Paul Wiedefeld.



Wiedefeld said Metrorail will run from 5 a.m.-11p.m. Friday.


Metro spokesperson Dan Stessel said riders commuting Friday night will need to be on the platform before 11 p.m. to board the last Metrorail trains of the night.


“You should not be out tomorrow at 11 o’clock at night, but if you are, you want to make sure you are at a Metro station no later than 11 o’clock,” said Stessel.

Stessel said riders who have to transfer between lines will still be able to do so.


Bus services will begin to operate Friday under a “severe” snow weather plan and will be limited to major routes. The last buses will depart from their stops at 5 p.m. and then complete their routes before ending services for the weekend.


Final trips for MetroAccess for riders with disabilities will depart at 1 p.m. to make sure riders are not stranded, said Wiedefeld. MetroAccess services will be suspended at 6 p.m. Friday and remain suspended for Saturday and Sunday.


Wiedefeld said Metro will store most of its trains in tunnels over the weekend to protect them from the elements.


Metro spokesperson Sherri Ly said Pepco supplies power to Metro, and staff said power may go out this weekend.

Non-essential Metro personnel will be dismissed at noon Friday, but essential personnel such as bus drivers and Metrorail conductors will report to work as scheduled, said Stessel.


Stessel said final trains will run in a special arrangement to make sure riders traveling from Washington to the ends of the lines will be able to complete their trips before service is suspended.


“We have this elaborate, choreographed process of running the last trains so that everyone can get from the center of the system out to every endpoint and make every connection that they need to; certain trains have to go first and so forth, and so that all radiates out from Metro Center (Station) except for yellow green, which doesn’t serve Metro Center (but) at Gallery Place,” Stessel said.
