SILVER SPRING—Montgomery College announced in a press release on Sept. 19 that it was the victim in a financial fraud case earlier this month.

According to the community college the case has been referred to the Baltimore Field Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and local law enforcement.

“The scheme followed a similar pattern to ones launched against other educational institutions. Upon learning of the fraud, the college took swift action to notify law enforcement and initiated an internal investigation into this fraud event. The crime resulted in a financial loss to the college and steps are being taken to recover the full amount,” Montgomery College wrote.

Marcus Rosano who serves as Montgomery College’s director of media and public relations explained that so far, the college believes that none of the personal information from students or staff have been compromised.

“At this time, we have not seen any evidence that any student or any employee data has been compromised,” Rosano said. “That’s really all I can say about it.”

On Sept. 20, the Montgomery College Student Senate said that they had no comment on the matter.

The FBI officer assigned to the case could not be reached for interview after multiple attempts.
