UPPER MARLBORO – A 48-year-old Capital Heights man will be spending the next 20 years in prison after the 2016 death of his wife’s grandson.

Anderson sentenced Lenwood Pearson, to 40 years in prison with 20 years suspended in the death of six-month-old Demetri Hooper, that allegedly happened on Sept. 13 in Capitol Heights.

Just after 7 p.m., paramedics from the Prince George’s County Fire Department were called to the 300 block of Zelma Avenue in Capitol Heights for an unresponsive infant. The infant was transported to the National Children’s Hospital Center in grave condition.

According to police officials, Pearson was asked by the child’s father if he could pick up his son, Demetri Hopper, from daycare because he was running late.

When the father went to Pearson’s home, he found his son unresponsive and called 911 for help. Once at the hospital, doctors discovered the child had broken ribs and a fractured skull.

On Sept. 16, an autopsy revealed the cause of death was trauma to the baby’s head. The manner of death was ruled a homicide.

Police arrested Pearson and charged him with first and second-degree child abuse. A homicide charge was added after Hopper’s death.
